KURLING (New Age Curling). New Age Kurling is a cross between curling, as played on ice, and bowls, though no ice or running with a brush is involved. Teams play with either red or blue “stones” that have ball bearings so that they can run fairly accurately on smooth surfaces.

Participants deliver “stones” from one end of the court to a target at the other end, those closest to the centre of the target score. Stones can be pushed along the floor by hand or by using the “pusher”, e.g. by a wheelchair user or someone who finds bending tricky. One set (8 Stones and 2 Targets) of curling equipment have been obtained thanks to a grant (from North Yorkshire County Council?). We are hoping to obtain a second set. Bridlington and Scarborough u3a Kurling Groups have been visited to see how they operate. Bridlington u3a have lent us some second hand Stones until we obtain our second new set. 20-25 members have expressed an interest in a new KURLING Group.

Successful “Try out” sessions have been held at both the Hunmanby Community Centre and Filey St John's Church (upstairs room).

As a result (Updated November 2025):

  1. Kurling has not continued at Hunmanby due to insufficient numbers
  2. At St John's Church, Filey, the Kurling Group meets weekly on a Tuesday from 11-12.00 in the upstairs room. Cost now £3. (to help fund the replacement of the ball bearings in our old Kurling stones).

April 2026. Following a successful demo at the March Monthly Meeting, we now have enough people to start a second Kurling Group. They now meet from 12-1 on a Tuesday at St John's Church - immediately after the 11-12 group. We now have 1-2 vacancies in each group.

If you would like to try it out please contact David Smith the Kurling Group Organiser.
